The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) Graduate Nurses' Association, Toronto Chapter was established in 1985. The UHWI School of Nursing is located in Mona, Kingston, Jamaica and has been in existence since 1948.

A group of friends, reminising about the fun-filled days at their school of nursing and indulging in "remember when..." stories, unanimously agreed that they had experienced a lot of fun and happiness while receiving an education of very high quality. Examining their professional paths, they realized that they represent many levels of nursing management and a wide variety of nursing specialties. They concluded that the years at UHWI, at no financial cost to them, was a learning adventure of fun resulting in personal and professional growth. These graduates of the UHWI School of Nursing, unanimously decided to find a way of "giving back" to their hospital and school, and to help others benefit as they did...and so the University Hospital of the West Indies, Graduate Nurses' Association, Toronto Chapter, was born.

Fund-raising events have been a major part of the energy of the Association - we have been blessed that all such activities have been successful. Fortunately, the members have managed to stretch themselves and planned many other successful major affairs, as diversity of activity is necessary to accomplish the objectives of the Association. Being immersed in multiple events, although very exhausting at times, have provided us with fun, personal growth and greater friendships.

Since the inception of The Alliance of Jamaican Alumni Associations, an umbrella group of Jamaican Alumni Associations, our Association has been a member. As members, we have enjoyed many privileges and feel we can be presumptuous in saying that we have contributed significantly to the success of the Alliance.
