FORTY-SEVEN years ago, Rev Henry Ward and Rev Madge Saunders, two ministers with the Presbyterian church, had a dream -- to build a high school on Christian principles that would offer quality education to Jamaican students. Today, the institution that is Meadowbrook High School is probably much more than either could foresee, a small project that grew into one of Jamaica's top secondary schools, producing graduates that excel in the arts, science and sports.

In 1958, a plot of land in the then highly exclusive neighbourhood of Meadowbrook in upper St Andrew was donated to the church, and in September of that year, 26 students and five teachers began classes.

The staff at the Meadowbrook High School has for years been quietly working to continue the good work started by the founders. Their labour has borne fruit.

Nowadays, Meadowbrook High School is one of the most sought after secondary institutions in the country. This distinction did not come easily, as initially, the school had to shake off the stigma of not being one of the so-called 'Traditional High Schools'. That is no longer the case, as the school has excelled academically, producing two Jamaican Rhodes Scholars, Beverly Wright and Cavell Creighton. Other renowned Meadowbrook alumni include past Olympian, sprinter John Mair and 'Reggae Boys' Claude Davis and Carlton Ebanks.

Aside from the subjects that are part of the regular curriculum, martial arts, music, a reading club, a science club and an environmental club are offered by Meadowbrook. The school's chess team has been the national champions for the past two years and according to the headmistress, the school plans to encourage its students to take part in scrabble.

On December 5th, 2005, a group of five past students came together to form the Meadowbrook High School Alumni Association (Ontario Chapter). An election of officers was held and positions were appointed as follows: Wayne Swaby, President, Beverley Clarke, Vice President and Treasurer, Marlene Mumby-Davids, Secretary, Lincoln Brown, Public Relations and Simonie Rose, Social Coordinator. We have a membership of about fifteen and are actively seeking to grow our membership base in order to fulfill our mandate, which is, to support our beloved Alma Mater, and fellow alumni, in any way we can.
